> Boxing for beginners in six steps: stance, footwork, the jab and cross, defence, combinations and recovery. Plus what to bring and how long it takes.

**Boxing for beginners** works best in a fixed order: stance first, then footwork, then the jab and the cross, then defence, and only then combinations on the pads and the bag. Two or three sessions a week is enough for the first month. Most people who train that often can hold a steady stance, punch straight and keep their hands up after about four weeks.

This guide walks through those six steps week by week, then answers the two questions beginners ask before their first class: what to bring, and whether boxing is hard to pick up. It is written for people training for fitness, not for a fight. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure or an old shoulder or wrist injury, check with a doctor before you start.

## Boxing for beginners: 6 steps for the first month

The six steps of boxing for beginners go from easy to hard, and each one needs the one before it. If your feet are not steady yet, combinations will only add mistakes. Use the table as a rough plan for the first four weeks.

| Week | Focus | You are ready to move on when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Stance, stepping forward and back | You can move around the mat without crossing your feet |
| 2 | Jab and cross | Your hand comes straight back to your face after every punch |
| 3 | Blocking, slipping, stepping out | You keep your stance while moving backwards |
| 4 | 2–3 punch combinations on pads and bag | Your punches stay tidy to the end of a round |

### 1. Stance

In boxing for beginners, every punch starts from the stance. Feet about shoulder width apart, front foot slightly turned in, knees soft, weight spread evenly on both feet. Hands up by the chin, elbows close to the ribs, chin tucked. Right-handed people usually stand with the left foot forward. From here you can punch and still cover your face and body.

### 2. Footwork

Beginners often stand still and lean forward to reach. Instead, the foot nearest the direction you want to go moves first and the other follows, and your feet never come together or cross. Practise small steps forward, back, left and right. After every step, you should be back in your stance.

### 3. The jab and the cross

The jab is a quick straight punch with the front hand, used to measure distance. The cross is a straight punch with the rear hand, and it is stronger because the hips and shoulders turn with it. The power starts in the legs: the rear foot pushes into the floor, the hips turn, and only then does the fist travel. Our guide on [how to increase punching power](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/how-to-increase-punching-power/) goes deeper into this.

### 4. Defence: block, slip, step out

Many people only think about hitting. In boxing for beginners, defence starts in week three. The basics are simple: keep your hands high to block, tilt your head to slip a straight punch, and take one step back out of range. Bring your hand back to your face after every punch. This habit is easy to build at the start and hard to fix later.

### 5. Combinations on pads and bag

Once single punches are tidy, the coach holds pads for two or three punch combinations, such as jab then cross. The pads move, so you learn timing and distance. After that, the heavy bag builds stamina. Our comparison of [heavy bag training benefits](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/heavy-bag-training-benefits/) explains what each tool is for.

### 6. Fitness and recovery

Boxing trains your heart and your strength at the same time. The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week for adults, plus muscle strengthening on at least two days ([WHO 2020 guidelines](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7719906/)). It also notes that [some activity is better than none](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/physical-activity), so starting with two sessions and building up is fine. Three boxing sessions a week cover most of those 150 minutes. A rest day between sessions gives your shoulders and wrists time to recover.

## How to start boxing for beginners: what to bring

How to start boxing for beginners is mostly about turning up with the right few things. The list is short, but missing one item makes the session harder.

- **Light, stretchy clothes.** A T-shirt and shorts are enough. You do not need boxing gear yet.
- **Hand wraps.** Wraps hold the wrist and knuckles firm inside the glove. If you have never wrapped, follow our guide on [how to wrap hands](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/how-to-wrap-hands-for-muay-thai/); the method is the same for boxing.
- **Gloves.** 12 to 16 oz is the usual training range. Ask the coach which size fits your weight before you buy.
- **Water and a towel.** Small sips between rounds.
- **A light stomach.** Leave two to three hours between a full meal and training. Our list of [what to eat before training](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/what-to-eat-before-muay-thai-training/) has ideas.

## Is boxing hard for beginners?

Is boxing hard for beginners? The punches are simple to learn. What takes time is doing three things at once: moving your feet, punching and defending without thinking about each one. That is the part where most people need a few months, not a few weeks.

The second hard part of boxing for beginners is fitness. A three-minute round feels much longer than three minutes on a treadmill, because you are moving and punching the whole time. Coaches usually start beginners on shorter rounds and longer breaks for that reason. Injuries are possible, mostly to the hands and wrists, and most of them come from poor wrapping or punching too hard too early. Our article on [Muay Thai injuries for beginners](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/muay-thai-injuries-for-beginners/) summarises what the research found for striking sports.

> On the first day I do not let you punch hard. I watch how you stand and how you step, then I teach the jab. If the stance is wrong and you punch hard, your shoulder and wrist pay first.

## Private or group boxing for beginners

Most RHINO students train privately with a coach, and for boxing for beginners that is the fastest way to have mistakes corrected. According to our [About page](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/about/), RHINO's two main coaches with a Boxing specialty are Coach Ares and Coach Debo. In a private session you choose the coach and the time. Group classes run on a fixed timetable with up to six people. Boxing hand work is part of classes such as [Combat Fit](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/programs/combat-fit/), mixed with conditioning.

| --- | --- | --- |
| Private 1-1, single session | 700,000 VND | 700,000 VND |
| Private 1-1, 24-session package | 13,200,000 VND | 13,200,000 ÷ 24 = 550,000 VND |
| Private 1-2, 24-session package (for two people) | 21,600,000 VND | 900,000 VND for the pair, so 450,000 VND per person |

## FAQ

### Do beginners have to spar?

No. In the first month beginners mostly work on pads, the bag and shadow boxing in front of a mirror. Sparring should start only when you can keep your stance under pressure and your coach agrees you are ready.

### Can boxing help with weight loss?

Boxing uses a lot of energy because you move and punch the whole round. Weight also depends on food and sleep, so do not rely on training alone. Our article on [what Muay Thai does for your body](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/what-does-muay-thai-do-for-your-body/) covers the wider benefits of striking training.

### Should I learn boxing or Muay Thai first?

Boxing uses only the hands, while Muay Thai adds kicks, knees and elbows. If you want to focus on hand work and footwork, boxing is the narrower start. Our comparison of [boxing vs Muay Thai](https://rhinothaiboxinggym.net/en/boxing-vs-muay-thai/) covers the differences in detail.

### Can I learn boxing at home?

Yes, for practising stance, footwork and shadow boxing in front of a mirror. The hard part is that nobody at home tells you when your elbow flares or your hand drops after a punch. A few sessions with a coach first show you what to practise at home.

Boxing for beginners does not need to be rushed: stand steady, step correctly, punch cleanly, then add speed. RHINO has two branches in Tay Ho, on Dang Thai Mai and To Ngoc Van. Call 091 2000 979 to book a first session.
