If you are asking what does Muay Thai do for your body, the best-supported answer is that it raises your overall fitness: a stronger heart and lungs, more endurance in your arms and core, more spring in your legs, and better agility and flexibility. A 2018 study of women who had never trained found improvements in every one of those measures after 13 weeks. What it did not find, in the same 13 weeks, was a significant change in body composition.
That second result is the part most articles skip, and it changes how you should judge your first three months. This guide goes through seven changes backed by research or health guidance, what the study actually measured, whether Muay Thai twice a week is enough, and what the sport will not do for you quickly. It is written for recreational trainees and is not medical advice.
What Does Muay Thai Do for Your Body? What One 13-Week Study Measured
Most of the evidence here comes from a study by Rapkiewicz and colleagues in the Journal of Sports Medicine and Physical Fitness. Twenty healthy, untrained women were split into two groups. One group trained Muay Thai twice a week and the other followed the same programme three times a week, both for 13 weeks.
Before and after, the researchers measured aerobic capacity, upper-body and abdominal endurance, leg power, agility, flexibility and body composition. The sample is small and all-female, so read the results as a strong signal rather than a guarantee. The table summarises what changed and how far each finding can be stretched.
| Change | What the evidence shows | How far it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Heart and lungs | VO2max improved after 13 weeks | 20 women, no men tested |
| Arm and core endurance | Upper-body and abdominal endurance improved | Measured by fitness tests, not punching power |
| Leg power | Explosive leg power improved | Same study |
| Agility and flexibility | Both improved | Same study |
| Body composition | No significant change in fat or lean mass | 13 weeks only |
| Mood and sleep | WHO links regular activity to less anxiety and better sleep | Applies to exercise in general |
| Weekly activity | WHO recommends at least 150 minutes a week | Muay Thai is one way to reach it |

7 Changes Muay Thai Can Make to Your Body
1. Is Muay Thai Good Cardio? The Evidence Says Yes
If your question is is Muay Thai good cardio, the short answer is yes. VO2max, the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise, is a standard measure of cardiorespiratory fitness, and it improved in both groups of the study. Rounds of pad work and skipping keep your heart rate up for long stretches, with short rests between.
A 2023 systematic review of 855 non-athletes also found that combat sports improved cardiorespiratory fitness. Be clear on its limits: the review covered Olympic combat sports such as boxing, taekwondo, judo and wrestling, not Muay Thai, and its authors rated the certainty of evidence as low to moderate. It supports the general direction, not a Muay Thai-specific claim.
2. More Endurance in Your Arms, Shoulders and Core
Holding your guard up for a full round is harder than it looks. Add repeated punches and the hip rotation behind every kick, and your shoulders and abdominal muscles work for most of the session. The study recorded better upper-body and abdominal endurance in both groups. Endurance here means repeating an effort for longer, not hitting harder.
3. More Power in Your Legs
Kicks, knees and footwork all start with your legs pushing off the floor. After 13 weeks, the participants’ explosive leg power had improved. You notice this outside the gym too, on the stairs or when you run for a bus.

4. Better Agility and Flexibility
Muay Thai asks you to change direction quickly, step out and back in, and lift your leg high for a kick. Both agility and flexibility improved in the study. If you sit at a desk all day, your hips and hamstrings are probably the stiffest part of your body, which makes the warm-up and stretching at the start and end of a class more useful than it first seems.

5. You Learn a Skill, Not Just a Workout
Unlike running or cycling, each Muay Thai session usually includes technique: how to stand, how to keep your guard, how to turn your hip into a kick. You have to remember the movement and coordinate your hands and feet at the same time. Because there is always one more detail to fix, the sessions rarely feel identical from week to week.
6. A Calmer Head and Better Sleep
The World Health Organization states that regular physical activity reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety and improves brain health and sleep. That is true of exercise in general, not Muay Thai alone. What a booked class or a session with a coach does add is a fixed reason to leave work at a set time.
7. An Easier Way to Reach 150 Minutes a Week
WHO recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week for adults, and nearly a third of adults worldwide do not reach it. A regular Muay Thai schedule gets you there without forcing yourself to run alone. For busy people this is often the most practical change of all.
What Muay Thai Will Not Do in Three Months
Part of answering what does Muay Thai do for your body is saying what it does not do. The study’s most useful finding is the one that disappoints people. Fitness improved across the board, but weight, fat mass and lean mass did not change significantly in 13 weeks. You may be fitter, faster and harder to tire, and still see the same reflection in the mirror.
This matters because many beginners start with weight loss as the goal and quit after two months when the scale has not moved. Track rounds where you stay on your feet, kicks that land higher, or a guard that holds through the last round, and you will see progress earlier. Body weight depends heavily on food, and our guide on what to eat after gym at night covers meals around an evening session.
Muay Thai does not remove the risk of injury either. Beginners can develop sore shins, wrists or shoulders if they increase intensity too quickly. Build up gradually, wrap your hands properly and tell your coach what hurts; the guide to Muay Thai injuries for beginners explains the common ones.

Is Muay Thai Twice a Week Enough?
For general fitness, the study suggests yes. The group training Muay Thai twice a week improved as much as the group training three times, with no significant difference on any measure. The authors concluded that people can choose their frequency by preference, since both produced similar results.
That is useful if you work long hours in Hanoi. Two sessions you actually attend beat three you keep cancelling. The study did not test once a week or more than three sessions, so it says nothing about those schedules, and it measured untrained beginners rather than people preparing to compete.
| Weekly sessions | What the study found | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | All fitness measures improved | Whether gains continue past 13 weeks |
| 3 | All fitness measures improved, similar to 2 | Whether 3 suits experienced trainees better |
| 1 or 4+ | Not tested | Anything |
At RHINO, most members train privately with a coach, either Private 1-1 or Private 1-2 for two people who book together. Private training has a flexible schedule, so you and your coach agree how many sessions a week fit. The Group 1-6 class has a fixed schedule of 3 sessions a week, 12 a month, with a maximum of six people. Both sit inside the range the study tested, so the choice comes down to your timetable and goals.
Want to feel what one session does?
A single Private 1-1 session is 700,000 VND and a group drop-in is 300,000 VND, with no package required. The coach starts you from your very first stance.

When to Check With a Doctor First
Ask a doctor before you start if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, are pregnant, or have an old knee, shoulder or back injury. Tell your coach about any previous injury in your first session so they can adjust the work. A coach can change intensity and exercises, but cannot replace a medical check.
During training, stop and tell the coach straight away if you feel dizzy, get chest pain or notice unusual pain. No round is worth pushing through when your body is warning you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to see results from Muay Thai?
In the study above, beginners’ fitness improved clearly after 13 weeks of two or three sessions a week. The researchers only tested at the start and the end, so the study cannot say which week the changes began. Visible changes in body shape usually take longer and depend heavily on diet.
What muscles does Muay Thai work?
Muay Thai uses your whole body. Your legs and hips drive kicks and knees, your core turns your body and absorbs effort, and your shoulders and arms hold the guard and throw punches. The study measured endurance in the upper body and abdominals and power in the legs, and all three improved.
Is Muay Thai good for women?
The main study in this article was carried out on untrained women, and every fitness measure improved. Lean mass did not change significantly in 13 weeks, so the worry about bulking up early has no support from this study. Our guide to Muay Thai for women in Hanoi answers the questions female members ask most.
Can I start Muay Thai if I have never exercised?
Yes. Everyone in the study was untrained when it began. A first session usually covers stance, footwork and basic strikes, and the coach sets the intensity to your current fitness. The guide to Muay Thai for beginners in Hanoi covers what to bring and what the first month looks like.
So, what does Muay Thai do for your body? Over about three months of regular training, the evidence points to better all-round fitness, while weight change needs more time and the right diet.
